What I Care About

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill

As we were getting ready to leave for a year-end celebration / game night, I received a call from the Communications department asking me to write a short note for the “Annual Appeal” e-series at work. To quote Heath Ledger‘s Joker in The Dark Night (2008): And here… we… go:

Since childhood, I have been passionate about both technology and making this world a better place.
Even though I had the support of amazing people while growing up, such as my parents, I did not have a female role model from the STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) other than my Mum. Fortunately, this changed in college when I was exposed to a community of successful women who work arduously to inspire and advance women in technology, notably the Anita Borg Institute, ACM-W, and CRA-W.

Nevertheless, many children cannot even begin to dream of such careers in technology in the face of hardships, like food and shelter. For this reason,  I also support three wonderful charities which provide me frequent opportunities to lend a hand in the fight against hunger and homelessness, particularly Food for the Poor, the Atlanta Community Food Bank, and St. Paul NYC’s Banquet for the Hungry and Homeless.
During this holiday season, consider donating your talents to these causes, and many other great ones out there!

Now, off to beating the boys at “Connect Four” & “Shuffle Board“, as usual! ^_^

~ Happy X-Mas! ~

P.S. I am more of a “STEAM” proponent== “Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics”!
